HISTORY:
The Department of English came into being with the inception of the college in 1973. Starting with a couple of students and one faculty, Mr Zomawia, the department now celebrates its fifty years and has produced many graduates. Mr. Zomawia, Mr. Jacob, Mr. Gautam Bannerjee and Mrs. Bannerjee respectively were the first esteemed lecturers within the first decade of consolidation. Due to the aspiration and commitment of all the faculty members from the time of its inception till date, the department has grown significantly.

Uniqueness of the department:
The department plays a crucial role in different programs of the college, such as grooming students for speech competitions and guiding their compositions in preparation for writing competitions. It conducts poetry writing sessions with the aim of nurturing and enhancing students' creativity. The department maintains good cooperation with the Department of Mizo to uplift literature in both subjects and seeks out possibilities to promote each other's literature. Apart from the courses in the Arts stream, the department also covers both the Science and Computer Science streams in the semesters where language is offered.
SWOC Analysis:
â–ª Strength:
1) Equipping students with the knowledge, skills and ethical participation in a society that is inclusive and inter-connected.
2) Exploring how cultural production across the globe is shaped by race, gender, sexuality, class, ability and intersections.
â–ª Weakness:
1) Number of texts, secondary reading materials and journals in the library need to be increased.
2) Inability to balance group and individual needs due to inadequate faculty.
â–ª Opportunities:
1) Since English is the most widely used language, students can get more exposure through literary studies.
2) Language studies other than one’s own mother-tongue, lead to a new mindset.
â–ª Challenges:
(1) Catering to the needs of students of different backgrounds, especially those having very weak knowledge of the English language. Due to the same problem, achieving the ideal objective of the syllabus is an extremely challenging task.
(2) Variations in English language such as the differentiation between formal and informal English.
(3) Instructing and acquiring correct phonetics and intonation.

International Mother Language Day 2024

On February 21, 2024, in observance of International Mother Language Day , the departments of Mizo and English jointly organised a seminar on " Pianpui Tawng Pawimawhna Leh Hmathlir" in Academic Block B, Room No. 101. Mr. Vanlalchanchinthahrilmawia, Head of the department of Mizo, presided over the event. The program commenced with singing a Mizo 'Lengkhawm Zai' followed by the distribution of prizes for a poetry writing competition. Mr. C. Ngurdingliana, Asst. Prof., Department of Mizo, our Resource Person, provided insights on the introduction, development ,importance and future prospects of the 1mizo mother language. The program concluded with Miss Lalmalsawmi, Assiatant Professor, Department of English, delivering a vote of thanks and leading a prayer.
