Uniqueness the department:
- Regular field trips are integrated into the curriculum to provide students with hands-on exposure to natural and realistic environments.
- The faculty is actively engaged in research, frequently participating in seminars and publishing research papers, which highlights the department's strong research activities.
- The student dropout rate is minimal, and the majority of students pursue higher studies at various reputed institutions and Universities.
- Students of the department have demonstrated their competence by excelling in competitive exams conducted by both private and government organizations.
SWOC Analysis:
Strengths:
- Dedicated faculty members who ensure high success rates in examinations.
- Excellent interaction between faculty and students, resulting in enhanced learning experiences and academic success.
- Regular faculty meetings and meticulous maintenance of an activity record book, resulting in improved coordination and more effective academic planning.
Weakness:
- The primary weakness of the department lies in the shortage of faculty. While the current faculty members are dedicated, they are not inexhaustible resources, and there are limits to what mortal human beings can achieve.
- While the department benefits from a well-equipped laboratory, funded by RUSA, to facilitate experiential learning through practicals, there remains a need for an increase in the number of equipment to allow for individual use without the necessity of sharing.
Opportunities:
- The department has ample opportunities to expand its research efforts, as the institution's green campus, rich in diverse flora and fauna, provides an excellent environment for research activities.
- In addition to the campus, the entire state of Mizoram offers vast areas of unexplored land that serve as valuable on-site learning resources. These areas allow students to enhance their learning experience beyond textbooks and classrooms, potentially fostering a greater interest in the subject.
- Despite being located in a semi-urban area with only a few feeder institutions, those institutions have strong zoology departments, ensuring a consistent stream of incoming students each year. This is a distinct advantage not shared by other science departments.
Challenges:
- The department lacks agreements with prospective employers for the highly competent graduates who are not pursuing higher education, primarily due to the remote location of the state, which affects campus placement opportunities.
- The department lacks the necessary funds to implement programs and initiatives designed to enhance the employability of its students.
- Due to a shortage of faculty, the department is unable to provide the necessary support, such as remedial or extra classes, to help academically weaker students improve their performance.
Future Plans
- To organize National/International level seminar/conference.
- To intensify research activity in the department.
- To introduce PG course.
