2. Joseph Lalngaihawma 2nd Rank (2017)
Uniqueness of the Department:
- Equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques of surveying and map-making their surrounding environment.
- Imparting students with the knowledge of the importance of our environment physical or human.
SWOC Analysis:
Strength
- GIS allows geographers to map, model, and interpret patterns and trends across various scales, from local to global. This spatial perspective is essential for urban planning, environmental management, land use land cover study.
- Geography bridges the natural sciences (physical geography) and social sciences (human geography), allowing for a holistic understanding of how physical processes and human activities interact and shape landscapes and environments. This integrative approach is crucial for addressing complex environmental, social, and economic challenges.
- Geography has a strong focus on human activities on natural systems. Geographers study issues such as climate change, land use change, water resources, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services, providing valuable insights for environmental policy and management.
Weakness
- The number of texts, secondary reading materials, and journals in the library needs to be increased.
- Deficiency of GIS laboratory and Remote Sensing tools
- The number of faculty members needs to be increased to ensure a diverse and comprehensive educational experience for the students.
Opportunity:
- Geography graduates have a wide range of careers.
- Spreading out the importance of our environment to society through the students.
- The students are equipped with the knowledge and skills of surveying techniques and map-making through GIS which will be useful for society.
- Strong focus on environmental processes and sustainability, geography professionals can contribute to initiatives related to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development goals.
- Geography professionals contribute to understanding cultural diversity, social inequalities, and demographic changes.
Challenges
- Improving the deficiency of GIS laboratory and Remote Sensing tools.
- To change the students' geographical perspectives, especially those newly admitted.
Study Tour at Mawmrang Tlang
25-03-2024
From March 25 to 27, 2024, the Department of Geography organized an enriching study tour to Mawmrang Tlang. The tour aimed to provide students with practical experience in field research and geographical analysis. Students used altimeters and GPS devices to measure the elevation of Mawmrang Tlang (mountain). They engaged in topographic mapping and analyzed the collected data to understand the mountain's geographical features. A comprehensive household survey was also conducted in Pawlrang Khua, a nearby village. Students designed questionnaires and conducted field interviews to gather data on the socio-economic conditions, demographics, and lifestyles of the villagers. The collected data was compiled and analyzed to identify patterns and trends.
Measuring Elevation of Para-gliding Take-off and Landing Spot
08-03-2024
On March 8, 2024, the Department of Geography conducted a significant field study at Bawngchawm, measuring the elevation of the paragliding take-off and landing spots.
Field Study at Thenzawl measuring the elevation of Dilpui
17-08-2023
The elevation of Dilpui was measured using handheld GPS devices in collaboration with the Fisheries Department. This assessment aimed to evaluate the potential for gravitational flow, given the lake's location in a relatively flat terrain.
