DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
History:
Physics department is one of the Science departments to have been established in the year 1995 which was rejuvenated in 2004 with a small group of teachers with diligent efforts, including the principal, Mr. Lalthanliana, and Dr. RC Tiwari, who was the first teaching faculty in science departments of the college. Since then, the department has been running smoothly under the guidance of Dr. Lalrintluanga Sailo, who has placidly served as the Head of Department, along with three other teaching faculties.
Faculty strength: 4
Rank Holders:
- C. Lalropuii – 2nd rank – 2013
- C. Vanlaldinpuia – 2nd rank – 2017
Uniqueness of the department:
- The department has dynamic faculties involving in teaching and research activities which motivates students to take part in the practical training and innovative ideas.
- The department also offers hands-on training, particularly in electrical circuits, to foster skill development and creativity among students. This is achieved through distinguished lectures both within and outside the college.
- Several research papers have been published by the teaching faculty in national and international journals.
Strengths:
- The teachers strive to maintain high-quality teaching to ensure that the knowledge gained benefits students both during their time in college and beyond.
- A highly experienced faculty with extensive knowledge, experience and expertise.
Weakness:
- Low enrollment which can be primarily attributed to the perception among many students that physics is a difficult subject, compounded by the lack of proficient physics teachers in feeder institutions.
Opportunities:
- The institution holds the distinction of being the only higher education establishment in the district offering undergraduate courses in Physics. This unique position provides the department with a direct opportunity for growth and development.
- The department, with its young and dynamic faculty members focused on research, has the potential to evolve into a research center provided it receives sufficient funding and support from external sources.
Challenges:
- Raising awareness and motivating students about the importance and potential career opportunities in the subject has consistently posed a challenge, as many students perceive physics as a difficult subject.
- Despite being recognized as one of the premier institutions for physics education, attracting students remains a challenge due to its location. This challenge is amplified by the tendency of individuals to pursue further education in the state capital, which is only a three-hour journey from Serchhip.
One-Week Workshop on Numerical Applications in Physics
25-07-2024
The Department organised a one-week workshop during 25th - 31st July, 2024, in collaboration with Mizoram Science, Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC), specifically designed for Higher Secondary students of Serchhip district. This workshop aims to introduce students to the essential skills of numerical methods and their applications in understanding physical concepts.
The workshop is led by experienced faculty members who provide insights into how numerical methods are used in real-world physics problems. Students learned how to apply numerical methods to solve complex physics problems, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
Hands-on Training on Household Wiring: Skills in Wiring, Maintenance, and Repair
25-05-2024
The department conducted hands-on training on Household Wiring: Skills in Wiring, Maintenance, and Repair was organized at Government Serchhip College on 25th May, 2024 as a part of Finishing School: Skill Development Course for outgoing students. The training aimed to provide participants with essential and practical skills and knowledge(fumdamentals, maintenance, repair) in electrical wiring specific to household applications.
The training involved a mix of theoretical discussions and practical demonstrations. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences, fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere.
Faculty Exchange Programme with GZRSC
05-02-2024
The Physics Department hosted a Faculty Exchange Program for Physics Core students from February 5-7, 2024. Dr. Ricky Lalhmangaihzuala, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Electronics at Govt. Zirtiri Residential Science College, conducted the classes. This program included lectures and interactive sessions over the three consecutive days.
Department Trip
01-04-2024
Due to the fact that there are only two students in the final year, the departmental trip was organized in collaboration with the NSS unit of the college. This arrangement allowed one student to participate in a trip to Zokhawthar in the Champhai District.
