History

The Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) program was introduced in 2005 for the 2005-06 academic session as part of the IT Education Program for the Northeast Region, initiated by the North Eastern Council Secretariat, Shillong. The inaugural class commenced on June 13, 2005, under the guidance of Mr. H. Lalchhanhima, who now serves as the esteemed Head of the Department. This department is the sole provider of a professional course at the institution. Initially, the course was under the purview of the University Grants Commission (UGC); however, starting from the 2024-25 academic session, it will be governed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Uniqueness of the department:

• This department is the sole provider of a professional course at the institution. 
• Unlike any other program at the institution, the BCA curriculum includes English Language and Communication Skills, as well as Personality and Soft Skills Development courses. These components significantly contribute to the overall personality development of the students, in addition to enhancing their technical skills. Furthermore, the inclusion of Accounting and Financial Management courses offers students ample opportunities to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset.
• A unique aspect of the BCA department is its emphasis on fostering a sense of responsibility in students by entrusting them with the maintenance of the computers. This hands-on approach not only instills a strong sense of accountability but also significantly enhances their hardware skills.
• The state-of-the-art 5G Laboratory of the institution is under the management of the department.

Weakness:

• Despite the faculty being highly competent and dedicated, the department is severely understaffed with only 3 faculty members. It is unrealistic to expect just three individuals to effectively teach students across three different classes throughout the entire day.
• Although the department boasts advanced IT and 5G labs, it lacks the necessary human resources, specifically a lab assistant. This absence hinders the optimal use and maintenance of these facilities, affecting the practical learning experience for students.
