On March 21, 2025, the Department of Zoology and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Government Serchhip College collaboratively organized a hands-on training program on vermicomposting. This workshop aimed to provide practical knowledge and skills related to organic waste management and sustainable composting techniques using earthworms.
The training was conducted under the expert guidance of Dr. C. Vanlalnghaka, Program Officer of the NSS unit, and Dr. Mary Zosangzuali, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Government Serchhip College. A total of 24 enthusiastic students actively participated in the program, engaging in both theoretical and practical sessions.
During the workshop, students learned about the significance of vermicomposting in environmental conservation, the selection of suitable earthworm species, the preparation of composting beds, and the process of maintaining optimal conditions for decomposition. Through hands-on activities, they gained valuable experience in setting up and managing a vermicomposting unit, fostering an understanding of its benefits for soil fertility and waste reduction.
The event successfully equipped students with practical skills and scientific insights, empowering them to implement vermicomposting techniques in their own communities, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability.
