REPORT ON THE VISIT TO I&PR EXHIBITION ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY, 1975

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the National Emergency of 1975, the Department of Information & Public Relations (I&PR), Serchhip District organized an exhibition to educate and inform the public about one of the most significant and controversial events in India's post-independence political history. The exhibition was held at I&PR Conference hall, Serchhip district and it was attended by History (core) students of Government Serchhip on 11th July, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Students attending the exhibition were guided by the two faculty members - K Lalrinchhana, HoD, and Dr. Lalchhuanawma, Department of History, Serchhip College.

The exhibition offered a comprehensive overview of the 21-month Emergency period declared on June 25, 1975, by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Through photographs, newspaper clippings, government documents and posters, the exhibition highlighted the political, social, and cultural impact of the Emergency on Indian democracy.

Key displays included:
(1) Official Proclamation and Presidential Orders imposing the Emergency.

(2) Censorship Materials, showcasing how press freedom was curtailed.

(3) Arrest Warrants and Jail Accounts of good number of political leaders who usually belonged to the then opposition parties in India

(4) Testimonies and First-Person Narratives from journalists, students, and activists who were imprisoned or silenced.

The exhibition served as a powerful reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions. Special attention was given to educating young students of the College about the importance of civil liberties, freedom of the press, and the role of public dissent in a healthy democracy.

The department of history, Government Serchhip College expressed sincere thanks to I&PR Department , Serchhip district in organising this remarkable exhibition,  commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1975 National Emergency. The exhibition was truly thought-provoking and well-organized. The visit was not only informative but also emotionally stirring, encouraging students to value and protect fundamental rights and freedoms, bestowed upon us by the Constitution of India
