CONGRATULATIONS TO DR.NGHAKTEA ON THE DISCOVERY AND REPORT OF 2 SPECIES OF BATS

Many congratulations Dr C.Vanlalnghaktea, Assistant Professor, Dept of Zoology, on the discovery and report of 2 species of Bats, raising India Bat list to 138 🥳👍🏻

Report: Two bat species recorded from India for the first time: study extends known range of Southeast Asian mammals into South Asia

A study led by researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Shillong, in collaboration with scientists from other institutions in India, the Hungarian Natural History Museum, and Dr. C. Vanlalnghaka, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Government Serchhip College, Mizoram, has documented the first-ever occurrence of two bat species, Glischropus bucephalus and Myotis indochinensis, in India.

The discoveries, based on specimens collected from the northeastern state of Mizoram, significantly extend the known distribution of both species from Southeast Asia into South Asia and highlight the rich but understudied biodiversity of the region. The findings underscore the importance of continued biodiversity exploration and taxonomic research in northeastern India, particularly in biodiversity-rich landscapes such as Mizoram.

The study was published in the journal Animal Taxonomy and Ecology and represents a significant contribution to the understanding of India's mammalian diversity and the biogeographical connections between South and Southeast Asia.
