AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (IPR)

An Awareness Programme on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was held on 30th September 2025 at 1:30 PM in Room B-201, Govt. Serchhip College. The event was jointly organized by the IPR Cell and the Entrepreneurship Knowledge Cell of the College.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Rebecca Lalmuanpuii, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry. The Resource Person, Mr. C. Laltlanzuala, Project Scientist–I, MISTIC, delivered a lecture on the importance of IPR in protecting innovations and promoting entrepreneurship.

He explained the major forms of IPR: Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Industrial Designs, and Geographical Indications (GI). He noted that Mizoram has witnessed local innovations such as an agarbatti-making machine and a device to prevent overflow of water barrels, reflecting the creativity of Mizo inventors. While these showcase local ingenuity, formal patent records are limited, highlighting the need for stronger patent filings in the state.

Mr. Laltlanzuala further highlighted Mizoram’s achievements in Geographical Indications (GI), noting that five traditional Puans (Puanchei, Tawlhlohpuan, Pawndum, Ngotekherh, and Hmaram) and the renowned Mizo Chilli have been successfully registered. These recognitions safeguard indigenous culture and agricultural heritage while enhancing their reputation and market value nationally and globally.

The programme concluded with a Vote of thanks by Mrs. Malsawmtluangi, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, who expressed gratitude to the Resource Person, organizers, and participants.
