8th FINISHING SCHOOL REPORT


The 8th Finishing School – A Skill Development Workshop for Outgoing Students was organized by the Finishing School Committee, Entrepreneurship Knowledge Cell (EKC), and IQAC, Government Serchhip College, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Women & Child Development (WCD), Serchhip District, from 17th to 20th June 2026.

On the first day, 17th June, 2026, registration of participants was conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., followed by refreshments for all attendees. The workshop was formally inaugurated with a welcome address delivered by the Principal of Government Serchhip College, Mr. C. Laldintluanga. In his speech, he welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of skill development, career preparedness, and personal growth for outgoing students as they transition from academic life to the professional world.

The inaugural session marked the beginning of four days of intensive training and capacity-building activities designed to equip students with essential employability, communication, leadership, and life skills necessary for their future endeavors.

The first technical session on the inaugural day commenced at 10:30 a.m. and continued until 12:15 p.m. The session was chaired by Mr. Lalrinchhana, Assistant Prof. & Head, Dept of History & Mr. David LF of D&C Coaching delivered his lectures on Soft Skills. He emphasized the importance of effective communication, teamwork, professionalism, time management, and interpersonal skills, which are essential for success in both personal and professional life.

Following the lunch break, the second session began at 1:00 p.m. and focused on Job Hunting Skills, also facilitated by Mr. David LF. The resource person provided valuable insights into various job search strategies, preparation of résumés and cover letters, utilization of online job portals, networking techniques, and methods for identifying suitable employment opportunities.

On the second day, 18th June 2026, the first session commenced at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 12:15 p.m. The session on Interview Skills was conducted by Mr. David LF. The participants were trained on interview preparation, professional etiquette, commonly asked interview questions, confidence-building techniques, and effective communication strategies for facing job interviews successfully.

The second session of the day began at 1:00 p.m. and it was chaired by Mr. Lalrinchhana, Assistant Prof. & Head, Dept of History. The session featured a Motivational Talk delivered by Dr. Lalramdintluanga, BDO, Serchhip. The speaker shared inspiring experiences and valuable life lessons, encouraging students to remain focused on their goals, cultivate a positive mindset, and persevere in the face of challenges. His message motivated the participants to pursue their aspirations with confidence, determination, and a strong sense of purpose.

Rev. Jonathan Pachuau, Synod FG&CC, Serchhip, also addressed the gathering and shared words of wisdom enriched with spiritual insights. He emphasized the importance of integrity, humility, faith, and perseverance in navigating life's journey and career pursuits. His thoughtful reflections encouraged the students to uphold strong values and remain steadfast in their commitment to personal and professional growth.

At the commencement of the Finishing School on the first day, participants were given the opportunity to select one of five skill development courses based on their interests and career aspirations. The courses offered were Pottery, Fashion Design Fundamentals, Welding, Microsoft Excel Proficiency, and Domestic House Wiring and Repairing.

Accordingly, on 19th June 2026, the third day of the programme, the skill development component of the Finishing School was conducted. The first technical session commenced at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 12:15 p.m., while the second technical session was held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Based on their selected courses, the participants were divided into separate groups and attended their respective training sessions under the guidance of experienced resource persons.

The hands-on training provided students with practical knowledge and essential technical skills in their chosen fields. The sessions were highly interactive and enabled participants to gain firsthand experience through demonstrations and practical exercises. This learner-centered approach helped students develop competencies aligned with their interests and future career goals.

The skill development classes were designed to enhance employability, foster self-reliance, and equip students with industry-relevant skills that would support their transition from academic life to the professional world, including opportunities for entrepreneurship and self-employment.

The final day of the programme, 20th June 2026, commenced at 10:00 a.m and its was chaired by Dr. Rebecca Lalmuanpuii, Asst. Prof., Dept. of Chemistry. The first session was conducted by the Deputy Director, Mizoram Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board (MBOCWWB), Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (LESDE), Mizoram. The resource person began the session by introducing the department and highlighting its roles and responsibilities, particularly in promoting the welfare of construction workers across the state.

During the session, he elaborated on the various welfare schemes and benefits available to registered members of the Board, including provisions related to education, healthcare, financial assistance, and social security. He also explained the eligibility criteria and procedures for availing these benefits.

The speaker encouraged the students to become aware of such government initiatives and to disseminate this information among their family members, relatives, and communities. He emphasized the importance of acting as informed citizens and community educators so that eligible beneficiaries could access the support and opportunities provided by the government. The session was both informative and engaging, creating awareness among the participants about welfare measures and their potential impact on society.

The next session was conducted by representatives from the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Women & Child Development (WCD), Serchhip District, which has been the principal sponsor of the Finishing School programme for the past three consecutive years. Government Serchhip College has maintained a strong collaborative relationship with DHEW through various educational and community-oriented programmes over the years.

During the session, the resource persons introduced the functions, objectives, and key initiatives of DHEW, highlighting the various schemes and programmes implemented for the welfare, empowerment, and development of women and girl children. They explained the support mechanisms available through the department and emphasized the importance of creating awareness about these opportunities within the community.

The session also included a comprehensive presentation on Financial Literacy, where participants were educated on the importance of financial planning, budgeting, saving habits, responsible borrowing, and informed financial decision-making. The resource persons encouraged students to develop sound financial management skills and to become financially responsible individuals capable of making informed choices for their future. The session was informative and interactive, providing students with valuable knowledge on both women’s empowerment initiatives and personal financial management.

After a short break, the Valedictory Function commenced at 12:00 noon. The session was chaired by Mr. Lalrinchhana, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of History, Government Serchhip College.

As part of the programme, the Chairperson invited the participants to share their experiences, reflections, and feedback regarding the Finishing School and their overall journey in the college. Several students came forward to express their thoughts and appreciation. They reflected on the knowledge and skills gained during the workshop and highlighted how the various sessions had contributed to their personal and professional development.

The students also conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to their respective departmental teachers, the organizers, and the college administration for providing them with numerous opportunities for learning, growth, and self-improvement throughout their years of study. They acknowledged the efforts of the college in organizing programmes such as the Finishing School, which helped prepare them for future academic, professional, and personal challenges.

The sharing session was both meaningful and emotional, providing an opportunity for students to reflect on their college experiences and express their appreciation for the support and guidance they had received during their time at Government Serchhip College.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Principal, Mr. C. Laldintluanga. In his closing remarks, he expressed his sincere gratitude to all the resource persons, sponsoring agencies, collaborating departments, organizing committee members, faculty, staff, and students whose contributions ensured the successful conduct of the 8th Finishing School. He particularly acknowledged the support extended by the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), WCD, Serchhip District, and the Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Department (LESDE), Mizoram.

The Principal encouraged the participants to make effective use of the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained during the four-day programme and to apply them in their future academic, professional, and personal endeavors. He expressed his hope that the training and exposure provided through the Finishing School would contribute positively to the students' career readiness, self-confidence, and overall development.

With a renewed sense of motivation and preparedness among the participants, the 8th Finishing School – A Skill Development Workshop for Outgoing Students came to a successful conclusion. Throughout the four-day programme, lunch were provided to all participants.
