The college began as a joint endeavour of enthusiastic citizens of Serchhip and Chhiahtlang villages. A few prominent individuals of these areas shared the vision of a college as to facilitate easy access to higher education of younger generations of Serchhip and other adjoining villages. On 2nd November 1972, an ad hoc body was formed to undertake necessary initiatives and consequently a series of fund raising drives were undertaken through public donations, charitable contributions of dedicated men, auctioning of lands and firm sites etc. When the money procured through various sources amounted to 7000 rupees, the Managing Board boldly decided to open the college the following year.

With a humble beginning, the college gradually grew in terms of student enrolment, staff and infrastructure. Despite its inception with only Arts stream, the college now offers traditional courses in Arts, Science and Bachelor of Computer Applications with a total of 13 departments.  At present, the college has 49 teaching staff, 15 non-teaching staff and caters to more than 400 students.

The college has a beautiful campus, spacious and shaded with lush green trees, presenting a scenic environment. It is located at New Serchhip, within 2 minutes walking distance from the National Highway 54. The administrative, academic and library buildings are situated at triangular hill-tops in the middle of the campus. Presently the college has 11 staff quarters, 1 boy’s hostel, indoor stadium, basketball court, volleyball court, one college canteen and a newly constructed two-storied academic building in addition to the existing building.

The opening of IGNOU study centre in 2002 is a valuable asset to the college. Beginning with only 38 students in the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) in January 2003, the centre now offers Certificate and Diploma courses in various fields of studies. Currently it has 300 students registered to its various academic courses.

The College unit of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is vibrant with social activities and programmes like cleanliness drives, fire protection, and construction of public utilities (like urinals and waiting sheds), blood donation and tree plantation within the campus and along the national highway under the guidance of Programme Officers.

The college is now covered under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) from 2015. This scheme has given the College high aspirations for its future development and growth. We have inceptional functioning under a newly appointed co-ordinator.

The college encourages the formation of student clubs under the guidance of the teaching staff. The Adventure Club was formed in 2014 which adds to the spirit of courage, confidence and expands the students’ perspective on life.

The college adopted its own emblem with the motto “Seek and Find” which captures the spirit and accomplishments of its founders. The college is committed to educating the minds of the youths in seeking knowledge, integrity and enhancing their potentials.
